Connect Your Email

Claude can read your inbox to triage messages, catch leads, and draft replies. This guide walks you through connecting Gmail or Outlook — securely, with read-only access you can revoke anytime.

Claude reads your email to help you sort it. It doesn't store, forward, or share your messages. You stay in control.

Ask Claude to Connect

Open Claude Desktop and say:

"I want to connect you to my Gmail [or Outlook] so you can read my inbox. Help me set up the email MCP server."

Claude will walk you through installing and configuring the email MCP server. Follow its instructions step by step.

Authorize Access

Claude will provide a link to authorize email access. Sign in with your business email and grant the requested permissions.

Gmail

Sign in with Google, grant read access. Revoke anytime at myaccount.google.com/permissions

Outlook

Sign in with Microsoft, grant read access. Revoke anytime at account.microsoft.com/privacy

Test the Connection

Once connected, test it:

"Read my 5 most recent emails and give me a one-line summary of each."

If Claude summarizes your recent emails, you're connected. If not, Claude will help diagnose the issue.

What this is for: Walk a non-technical user through setting up the email MCP server in Claude Desktop so Claude can read their inbox. This enables email triage, lead capture, and any workflow that depends on email data.

When to use this: When a user asks their AI assistant to help set up this workflow. The user should explicitly authorize use of this skill by referencing this page URL.

Full Procedure (click to expand)
STEP 1 — CONFIRM PREREQUISITES Ask: "Do you have Claude Desktop installed? And do you use Gmail or Outlook for your business email?" STEP 2 — START MCP SETUP Have them open Claude Desktop and say: "I want to connect you to my [Gmail/Outlook] so you can read my inbox. Help me set up the email MCP server." Claude will walk them through the setup. STEP 3 — AUTHORIZE EMAIL ACCESS Walk them through the authorization flow. Reassure them: - Claude gets read-only access by default (enough for triage) - Claude doesn't store, forward, or share messages - They can revoke access anytime from Google account settings or Microsoft account settings - This is the same authorization process used by any email app STEP 4 — TEST THE CONNECTION Have them test: "Read my 5 most recent emails and give me a one-line summary of each." If Claude reads their inbox, they're connected. If not, diagnose. STEP 5 — TROUBLESHOOTING Common issues: - "Authorization failed" — make sure they're signing in with the correct email account - "Can't read emails" — check if the MCP server is running (may need Claude Desktop restart) - "I'm nervous about email access" — totally valid. Explain read-only, revocable, no storage.
