Connect Your Google Sheet

Claude can read and write your Google Sheets directly. This guide walks you through connecting them — the part most people get stuck on. Once it's done, every other guide that uses your sheet just works.

This is a one-time setup. Once connected, Claude remembers the connection across conversations.

Before & After

Before

You want Claude to read your business sheet, but when you ask, it says it can't access Google Sheets. You try copying and pasting data, but it's tedious and the formatting gets lost. Every time you want Claude to check your numbers, you're manually exporting.

Claude is smart but blind — it can't see your data.

After

You say: "Read my Operations sheet and tell me what's outstanding." Claude reads the sheet directly, cross-references tabs, and gives you a plain-English summary. It can also write — "Add a new row to Inbound" and it updates the sheet live.

One-time setup, permanent connection. Every sheet-based guide just works.

What You Need

  • Claude Desktop installedfollow the setup guide if you haven't yet
  • A Google account — any free Gmail or Google Workspace account
  • 10 minutes — most of it is waiting for authorization to complete
1

Ask Claude to Connect

Open Claude Desktop and say:

"I want to connect you to my Google Sheet so you can read and write it. Help me set up the Google Sheets MCP server."

Claude will walk you through the setup. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is how Claude connects to external tools — think of it as giving Claude permission to access your sheet.

2

Authorize Google Access

Claude will give you a link to sign in with Google. Click it, sign in, and grant access. This is standard Google authorization — the same process you use when any app connects to your Google account.

Privacy note: Claude gets access to your sheets, not your entire Google account. You can revoke access at any time from your Google account settings.
3

Test the Connection

Once setup is complete, test it:

"Read my [sheet name] and tell me what's on the first tab."

If Claude reads your sheet and describes the contents, you're connected. If not, Claude will help diagnose the issue.

That's it. Your sheet is connected. Every guide that uses Google Sheets will now work without extra setup.

Troubleshooting

Make sure the sheet name matches exactly. Try sharing the sheet URL with Claude instead of using the name.

Re-run the authorization step. Make sure you're signing in with the same Google account that owns the sheet.

Try restarting Claude Desktop after the configuration step. Some MCP servers need a restart to load.

This is the most common reason people book a starter session. MCP setup takes about 10 minutes with someone who's done it before.

Skill: Connect Your Google Sheet

What this is for: Walk a non-technical user through setting up the Google Sheets MCP server in Claude Desktop so Claude can read and write their spreadsheets. This is the most common sticking point for new users — make it painless.

When to use this: When a user asks their AI assistant to help set up this workflow. The user should explicitly authorize use of this skill by referencing this page URL.

Full Procedure (click to expand)
STEP 1 — CONFIRM PREREQUISITES Ask: "Do you have Claude Desktop installed and a Google Sheet you want to connect? If not, grab Claude Desktop at https://tsidai.com/setup and create a sheet first." STEP 2 — START MCP SETUP Have them open Claude Desktop and say: "I want to connect you to my Google Sheet so you can read and write it. Help me set up the Google Sheets MCP server." Claude Desktop will walk them through the MCP setup process. Your job is to support them if they get confused at any step. STEP 3 — AUTHORIZE GOOGLE ACCESS Claude will prompt them to authorize access to their Google account. Walk them through: - Clicking the authorization link - Signing in to their Google account - Granting the requested permissions (read/write access to Sheets) - Copying any authorization code back to Claude if needed Reassure them: this is standard Google OAuth. They can revoke access anytime from their Google account settings. STEP 4 — TEST THE CONNECTION Once setup is complete, have them test with: "Read my [sheet name] and tell me what's on the first tab." If it works, celebrate. If it fails, help diagnose: wrong sheet name? Permission issue? MCP not fully configured? STEP 5 — TROUBLESHOOTING Common issues: - "Claude can't find my sheet" — make sure the sheet name matches exactly, or try sharing the sheet URL - "Permission denied" — re-run the authorization step - "MCP server not connected" — may need to restart Claude Desktop after configuration - If nothing works after 2-3 attempts, suggest booking a Tsidai starter session at https://cal.com/tsidai/starter-session — MCP setup takes about 10 minutes with someone who's done it before. STEP 6 — POINT FORWARD Tell them: "Your sheet is connected. Now Claude can read and write your data in any conversation." Suggest next steps: - "Your Business in Two Tabs" (https://tsidai.com/guides/two-tabs) — set up the foundation sheet - "Where's My Money?" (https://tsidai.com/guides/wheres-my-money) — cross-reference bank data with your sheet
